Happy Day Resource Teachers Segment Title
The children of our school are indeed fortunate to have three excellent resource teachers available to augment our educational programs. Our parent produced annual spring fundraiser insures that we can provide a music, a Spanish and a curriculum resource teacher for our Preschool, Kindergarten and Building Blocks programs throughout each week! Given the importance of the first five years of learning, our entire staff supports the idea of teaching to all of a child's seven senses and his/her ability to learn.

Meet Our Music Resource Teacher:

The children look forward to each opportunity to "Come sing a song" with Marilyn Lee, who is our music and language resource teacher. Marilyn was our much loved Kindergarten teacher for 23 years and now, after retiring in 2001, she found working with the children in music and also language arts, a
perfect place to be!

Marilyn is an accomplished pianist and organist who also loves to sing and bring the gifts of music to young children. Not only does she lead and provide accompaniment for their performances, but she spends many hours per week in the classrooms working directly with the children. She also models
wonderful teaching techniques for the other teachers to observe as she works with the children in both large and small groups.

Preschoolers in the Discovery and Adventure classrooms look forward to her visits on Monday mornings, when they not only sing, but learn to use many rhythm instruments and execute their "Morning March!"

On Wednesdays she works with the Level I Kindergarteners for music as well as teaches them letters and phonics using the much loved Integrated Total Language Program, known as ITL. On Fridays she works with Kindergarteners, in small groups, to develop their interest in music, singing and instruments.

Annually the Kindergarteners put on a Christmas and Spring concert for their families, under her direction, much to the enjoyment of their parents! A great tradition now continues for 25 years! Thank you Mrs. Lee.

Meet Our Spanish Resource Teacher:

Bienvenidos! My name is Katie Marek, and as a resource teacher, I have the unique and exciting opportunity to introduce your child to the Spanish language! Over the course of the school year, I cover with the children basic concepts like numbers, colors and body parts. They also learn simple social phrases that help to make interaction possible as well as polite words like "Por Favor" and "Gracias."

In order to make Spanish fun and relevant for young children, I teach them with songs, stories and games. The music is particularly important for helping them to use unfamiliar sounds and words. The stories I read are in English with some Spanish vocabulary and are generally about many different aspects of Latin culture. Sometimes I read a familiar children's book in
Spanish as it is fun for us to hear the spoken language. I am always gratified to hear the children using Spanish at school.

Please have your child join us every Wednesday before, during and after lunch, in Building Blocks, when we are immersed in the Spanish language. I am also available as a resource teacher to the preschool teachers who introduce Spanish into their morning curriculums along with sign language.

Kindergarteners in the Level I program have Spanish on Wednesday mornings and those in the Level II program have Spanish throughout their Friday morning class, as I work in that program also as a classroom aide, while attending Sonoma State University.

Meet Our Curriculum Resource Teacher:

The teaching teams of our Preschools are so very fortunate to have Mrs. Karen Haugen as a mentor to help write and find resources to support their curriculums! Her love of children's literature and her knowledge from teaching preschool children for the past 19+ years is so valuable and appreciated.

After teaching at our school for so many years, she has first hand knowledge of where and how teachers can find information, supplies and formerly prepared resources for their
curriculum planning. She works with each individual teacher as a guide when they are writing their weekly teaching plans for the preschool children.

Mrs. Haugen teaches daily in the Discovery Preschool as well, and also shares her interest in sign language, music and Spanish with the teachers and children. Would you believe that she also coordinates our storage systems for art supplies and curriculum materials as well as seeks new educational resources for teachers? Hard to believe, but true!
