Curriculum is very important to the success of a
classroom. Without some sort of blueprint, there is
no structure to the daily plan. But, with any good
plan, an emergent curriculum can also honor the
interest of the children and bring more life to the
classroom.
So, here is how all of this happens.
Each teacher in each preschool classroom chooses
several themes to focus on. Sometimes it can be your
favorite, but even more fun and challenging is to dive
into unchartered waters and develop something entirely
new. With approximately twenty eight different
themes, you can only imagine the work that goes into
each one in selecting just the right songs, books,
flannel boards, art projects, large motor and small
motor activities, sensory activities, prop boxes and
even to the choice of the playdough color. The
teachers put their hearts into their work to make it
fun, enjoyable and at the same time, meet the needs of
every child.
We can always use help in developing our curriculums.
One thing we always need is scrap wood for our
woodworking center. Small pieces of soft wood
suitable for young hands is best. Our playhouse
clothes sometimes need mending or laundering. Don't throw out those old prom dresses,
shoes, purses and tiaras. They make great dress up
clothes, (small sizes please). The boys love to wear
pretend firefighter gear or police uniforms or other
work related clothing, again small sizes are best.
Remember, when children are playing, they are really
working to accomplish social, cognitive and
developmental skills. It is our job to see that they
have everything they need for their work.
