Some Suggestions For A Happy Day!
We encourage parents to visit our school and tour our classrooms with
their child as an important sharing of your child’s new school environment,
before they experience their first “solo day” at school. New beginnings are
often exciting and upsetting at the same time; we want their first learning
experience to be a positive one!
* Keep dialogue about attending school short and positive, light and
happy!
* Please have your child walk up to the school each day. (Although you
may be tempted to carry him/her, your child will feel more independent and
secure in the message by you, to go off to enjoy the new day ahead!)
* We find that a quick, positive, “ I love you”, “I’ll see you soon”, a
happy hug, a kiss and a wave to your child in the school entryway is the
best way for parents to depart daily.
* It’s usually best not to discuss fearfulness, tearfulness or
reluctance in front of or with your child. If you predict this behavior,
he/she might live up to your expectations.
* Please arrive for dismissal promptly...possibly earlier the first few
sessions to reassure your child that your arrival can be assured!
* Your child will be glad to see you or their caregiver at dismissal
time; this is a vital part of building that all important trust
relationship. “My teachers love me, take care of me, guide me in my school
day...and then I go safely back to my familiar environment.”
* Once home, after the first few days of school, expect your child to
be tired, amazed, shy, introspective, and/or excited when they get home.
Be ready to listen; but a warm smile, a little praise and a hug will be much
more appreciated than a lot of questions about school at first.
* Remember, “children’s play is their work” and we all know about work!
After expending so much physical, mental and emotional energy these first
school days, your child may even prefer alone time or a nap after school.
* Our greeter and dismissal teachers will always be happy to schedule
times for you to talk in detail about your child. We encourage parents to
use our “Parent Grams” to share information about their child. Our
director’s cell phone number is always available for parents. |
