Children's Literature Review

Adventure Room Segment Title

What Happens in the Adventure Room?

The Adventure Room offers opportunities for preschool children to learn through play.  The room is large, colorful, and light-filled.  Several different centers are offered daily to support physical, cognitive, social and emotional growth of the children.  The areas are divided into art, table toys / manipulatives, sensory motor, dramatic play, blocks and library.  Each member of the teaching team writes curriculum and rotates weekly through the various areas of our classroom.

We offer a diverse environment which allows the children to try out new roles, explorations in learning and the newfound awareness that outside of themselves exists a whole universe.  They become more aware of one another and new relationships as they grow up, scaffolding new knowledge onto their base of experience.

Our loving, educated teaching team invites and supports an
"I can do it all by myself" process.  Preschoolers learn best through play.  Their process is more important than the end product.  Our staff lovingly guides the children through their exciting enterprises which initially have uncertain outcomes – the very definition of the word adventure.  Materials and supplies are housed in clearly labeled containers.  A print rich environment surrounds the children, from books in the library to written words and phrases found throughout the classroom.  Language is encouraged through dramatic play, reading and communicating with the children each day. Through these efforts, they build confidence and trust in their environment.

To witness a child's surprise and delight at realizing the swipe of their yellow drenched paintbrush over wet blue blots on their paper has yielded a bright green hue is truly a "goose bumps" moment.  What usually follows is a search for the green paint cup at the easel.  Of course, it isn't there.  They made it "all by myself."

Or, the wonder of two square blocks fitting perfectly on top of the rectangular one.  "Is it two rectangles, now?" becomes their question as they ponder this math equation at age four.  Or, their sense of pride at finding their cubby for the first time, "all by myself," making a new friend through their own carefully orchestrated playhouse "events," and widely grinning, with tree branch in hand, as they exclaim that they "just found a letter Y on the playground."

Please call our Happy Day office to arrange a time to visit our wonderful school.  We promise you your own Adventure!
